I looked lots of stuff up when I was filling in the poll, I thought people might find it useful...
caves - Gouffre de Padirac
This is down a huge hole, and has underground rivers and looks Well Cool, but is not a cave painting cave
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Padirac_Cave It appears to be about 10 euro and 46 minutes drive North East from Lamastonie 46500 PADIRAC Brive-la-Gaillarde France
caves - Grotte de Font-de-Gaume
This is a cave painting cave. 'Font-de-Gaume is the only site in France with polychrome cave paintings that is still open to the public'. So we'd probably better do our bit in going and destroying them then... Limited to 80 people a day, they only do one tour a week in English, would need a bit of organisation. It appears to be 1 hours drive NW of Lamistonie
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Font-de-Gaume http://eyzies.monuments-nationaux.fr/en/
4, avenue des Grottes, 24620 Les Eyzies-de-Tayac-Sireuil, France
caves - Grottes de Pech Merle This is another cavepainting cave. It's the one with the footprints
'Visiting groups are limited in size and number so as not to destroy the delicate artwork with the excessive humidity, heat and carbon dioxide produced by breathing.' It's 10 euros, and the limit seems to be 700 people per day, so probably easier to see than Font-de-Gaume. The website says there are some tours in English.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pech_Merle http://www.pechmerle.com/english/tarif.php I think it's 36 minutes North West of Lamistonie, so would join up quite well with a trip to Font-de-Gaume, if the English tours were on the same day
caves - Lascaux replica This is The Most Famous Cave Painting Cave. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lascaux Well, a replica of it, because the real one is closed. I want to see it, because it's The Cave of the Zeladoni, and I would be excited just to walk around the grounds. Is there really a huge bolder on the skyline like the one Ayla dreamed of? http://www.lascaux.culture.fr/ http://www.lascaux.culture.fr/infos_pratiques.php?lng=en It's one hour and 12 minutes North West of Lamistonie.
So I think there is one Day Of Cave Painting Caves, where we go north west and see two or three of the famous cave painting caves (although if people really want one cave and something else in that direction, err, you could twist my arm) and one Different Random Cave, which is more a natural wonder, and is North East.
Hope that helps!
